Pen system trailers are used to transport livestock such as cows, sheep, pigs, goats, and other animals from one location to another. Some owners use pen system trailers to haul horses. Most horses, however, are too big for stock trailers. Their owners would be better off using a horse trailer. The pen trailers can range in size, shape, and style to accommodate all types of animals; some models feature multiple levels of pens. In general, the trailers come in two different pull types: gooseneck and bumper pull. Using a pen system trailer is a great way to keep your livestock safe in transit.
How tall are livestock trailers?
The average livestock trailer is 6 ft. 6 in. tall, and the average cattle trailer is slightly taller at 6 ft. 8 in. Although trailers of this size are frequently used to transport small livestock such as cattle, pigs, and chickens, some owners use it to transport short horses. However, keep in mind that horse trailers are typically much larger than livestock trailers, with an average height that ranges between 7 ft. tall and 7 ft. 6 in.
Livestock trailers are generally less costly than horse trailers, and they often come with open spaces by the door and on the sides of the trailer in place of windows. Many stock trailers also include a front tack room, giving you plenty of space to store gear and equipment.
How do I choose a livestock trailer?
Start by making a list of what you plan to use the trailer for. What type of livestock do you have? The ideal trailer for you will depend on whether you have cattle, sheep, pigs, show horses, or hogs. Do you typically haul large amounts of feed and equipment? If you make frequent cross-country journeys with your livestock, you may be better off choosing a gooseneck trailer, as it is easy to maneuver and provides greater stability for the road.

Are pen system livestock trailers air-conditioned?
Most stock trailers have slat sides, meaning the sides of the trailer are open to allow airflow. Many models also come with an insulated roof and roof vents to allow even more air to flow through the trailer. Some custom models of stock trailers may have Plexiglass windows in place of slats. However, most livestock trailers are not air-conditioned.
Some enclosed horse trailers come with air conditioning units. If you want to install an air conditioning unit in your trailer, call your local horse trailer or RV shop to ask about the cost of installation. Air conditioning can be a good investment in horse trailers or enclosed livestock trailers, particularly if you tend to haul your animals on long journeys through hot climates.
How much do livestock trailers cost?
Livestock trailers (also called stock trailers) may cost anywhere from $14,000 to $70,000, depending on the make, model, and style. Most models are available in either bumper pull or gooseneck styles. On average, bumper pull trailers are less expensive. They attach to the ball hitch on the back of the towing truck or vehicle, and they are easy to hook up – even for beginners – because they don’t require much additional towing equipment.
Gooseneck trailers, on the other hand, have a more extensive towing system. They tend to be more costly, but they offer more stability on the road and can be used to haul larger weights thanks to their heavy-duty strength.
